Its advent precedes the 2 CONC organization of the county nearly a score of years and the members of the 2 CONC family have been important factors in promoting the development and 2 CONC growth. George Newton Hays was born in Virginia and married Sarah 2 CONC (Graham) Hays. As a young man he migrated to South Carolina. About 2 CONC 1805, he came to Georgia, Hancock Co., and 1820 he settled in what is now 2 CONC Newton County. A George Gramling 2 CONT is found living in Spartanburg Dist., SC in 1840 (age 20-30) with a wife 2 CONT (also age 20-30) and 1 male child under the age of 5 (probably Andrew who 2 CONT was born in 1840). Thefamily lived next door to a Ludy Cothran who is 2 CONT believed to be "Polly's" father (one of the Gramling daughters was named 2 CONT Luduskia). The Gramling family moved to Cherokee Co., GA prior to 1846. 2 CONT E.G. Gramling served in the Mexican Warin a unit known as the "Canton 2 CONT Volunteers" along with his brothers Kennedy (Captain), William (1st. 2 CONT Sgt.) and Richard. The Gramling brothers were lucky toescape with there 2 CONT lives as casualties were 2 CONT very high (close to 50%). E.G. Gramling also served as 1st. Lieutenant 2 CONT of Company D, 28th Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of 2 CONT Tennessee, C.S.A. (known as the "McAfee and Donaldson Guards"). He 2 CONT entered the service on SEP 3, 1861, but resigned on JUL 1, 1862 2 CONT For some reason the E.G. Gramling family was not enumerated in the 1850 2 CONT census of Cherokee Co. The enumerator found only his father Andrew, and 2 CONT two bothers, Daniel (D.A.) and Richard. There appear to be a large 2 CONT number of Cherokee Co. families missing from the census that year. E.G. 2 CONT and family were found living in the Sallacoa District in 1860; his 2 CONT parents, Andrew and Rebeccawere listed as living in the same household. 2 CONT E.G. Gramling began his life of public service when he as elected as 2 CONT Justice of the Inferior 2 CONT Court of Cherokee Co. serving a two year term that began on JAN 23, 2 CONT 1865. He also served as Sheriff of Cherokee Co. from MAR 4, 1867 until 2 CONT FEB 7, 1871 (two two year terms). He served again from JAN 9, 1873 until 2 CONT JAN 18, 1875 and also from JAN 10, 1879 until JAN 11, 1881. His final 2 CONT two two year terms were from JAN 12, 1883 until JAN 8,1887. In all, he 2 CONT served six two year terms, or a total of twelve years as the County 2 CONT Sheriff. 2 CONT By 1870 the family had moved to the Canton District (792nd Militia 2 CONT District). The location of the home of E.G. Gramling is shown on the 2 CONT Cherokee Co. Map of 1895. His farm was in land lot 236 adjacent to the 2 CONT Lawrenceville Highway (now known as the Hickory Flat Road) in a community 2 CONT known as Indian Knoll. 2 CONT E.G. Gramling deeded 1/2 acre of land to the trustees of the Indian Knowl 2 CONT (i.s.) Academy on January 10, 1878. This land was locatedin land lot 2 CONT #235. Trustees of the Academy at the time of the deed were A.T. Scott, 2 CONT W.D. Lacy and E.G. Gramling. The land was conveyed by "said E.G. 2 CONT Gramling for and in consideration of the love and regard he has for the 2 CONT cause of Education, and One Dollar received". The location of the 2 CONT Academy is also shownon the Cherokee Co. Map of 1895. At some point, 2 CONT the school was taken over bythe county public education system. Today 2 CONT there is a small community center in the building that once housed the 2 CONT Indian Knoll School, but the building does not appear to be old enough to 2 CONT be the original Academy building. 2 CONT E.G. Gramling died on the morning of JUN 15, 1899 after an illness of 2 CONT several months. AMasonic Tribute to E.G. Gramling was published in the 2 CONT Cherokee Advance of Friday, JUN 30, 1899. If 2 CONT this was the case the age given in 1840 would have to be incorrect as she 2 CONT is shown as 75 years old in 1860 and would have been about 55 in 1840. 2 CONT From the 1850 census of Spartanburg Co., Ludy Cothran, age 72 born in 2 CONT Virginia and wife Mary, age 62 also born in Virginia. One daughter, 2 CONT Elizabeth Cothran, age 23 born in South Carolina. No other children were 2 CONT living at home.
